CPR Essentials

What Should You Do in an Emergency?

General adult CPR awareness steps. Follow your local emergency dispatcher and recognised first-aid training guidance.

1

Check Safety and Responsiveness

Make sure the scene is safe. Tap the person's shoulders and shout to check for a response.

2

Call for Emergency Help

Ask someone to call emergency services and bring an AED if available. In India, call 112.

3

Check Breathing

If the person is unresponsive and is not breathing normally or is only gasping, suspect cardiac arrest.

4

Start Chest Compressions

For an adult, place your hands in the centre of the chest. Push hard and fast at 100–120 compressions per minute, about 5–6 cm deep, allowing the chest to recoil.

5

Use an AED When Available

Switch on the automated external defibrillator and follow its spoken instructions. Continue CPR until emergency help takes over or you cannot continue.

Important Safety Note

CPR guidance differs for infants, children and certain emergency situations. If trained, provide rescue breaths according to your training. Otherwise, follow the emergency dispatcher's instructions.

In a life-threatening emergency, call 112 in India.
